Is It Possible to Do Both?...
It is absolutely possible! And it is essential that you embrace this truth if your business and life are to improve and the world in which you live is also to improve.
Do you believe, even in part, that it is wrong to make a lot of money while doing good? Or do you think that it is too hard to make money in business without having to worry about social impacts, even though you might like to? Or do you accept that it is possible to make a lot of money while doing good in your business (beyond just cutting a cheque to a charity), but just don't know how to do it as effectively as possible?
A Movement is Beginning...
If you said yes to any of these questions, then it is important that we speak. I believe at my core that it is the spirit of the entrepreneur that will help transform our communities and our world. There is a growing trend, that has not yet been fully identified as a movement, of small business owners refusing to leave their values and social desires at the doors of their businesses. Instead, they seek to integrate those values into their businesses, to evaluate the impact of their businesses on their employees, on their communities and on the environment and to make a lot of money while doing so!
What Type of Philanthreprneur are You?...
There are essentially 4 types of philanthrepreneurs, as outlined in the following table. Each has slightly different needs.
| Product | Process | Process & Product | |
| Intentional |
A |
B |
C |
| Accidental |
D |
E |
F |
The distinction between Intentional and Accidental is between those who have consciously designed their business to embrace certain social objectives and those whose businesses have wound up having elements of social responsibility without any actual decision to that effect from the owner.
The distinction between Process and Product is as follows: Some people create a product/service that inherently has social utility. For example, the manufacturer of wheelchairs that increase the mobility of and accessiblity for the disabled is a product philanthrepreneur, as is one who has developed an exercise program to reduce obesity in preschoolers. Some people have products/servicesthat, in themselves, are not necessarily designed to improve the world, but the way they in which the businesses run qualify them as philanthrepreneurs. For instance, a courier service that only uses transit or that uses electric or bio-fuel may be such a business.
How Can You MakeGreater Profits andGreater Impacts?...
Depending on where you are in this chart, there are different skills/techniques to more fully significantly have the impacts your want. In general, there are 3 impacts you are looking for: a smaller environmental footprint, a larger social impact footprint and much larger profits.
I have customized many of our services to specifically address the unique needs of our services. If your business is generating less than 500k in revenues, the programs most appropriate for you are ProfitCLUB, ActionCLUB and 1-1 Coaching. Click on the relevant program to learn more about it. If your business is generating more than 500k, you will want to consider ActionBOARD, 1-1 Coaching and, possibly ActionCLUB if you feel your training in fundamentals is lacking.
ProfitCLUB is an ongoing education, networking and peer to peer coaching club. I am shortly starting a Green ProfitCLUB for businesses with a conscious desire to improve their environmental practices.
ActionCLUB is a 7 session entreprneurial bootcamp spread over 14 weeks that allows you to learn (or re-learn) the fundamentals of successfully running a business and of minimizing your environmental footprint and maximizing your social impact.
ActionBOARD is an external board of directors consisting of you, me and up to 9 other owners of businesses over $2 million in revenues. We meet once/month for 1/2 day and you all act as directors for each others' businesses. There is education, networking and focused problem solving on the members' businesses benefitting from the collective wisdom of experienced and successful entrepreneurs. One of the challenges for philanthrepreneurs like you is finding others who understand and share the objectives and challenges for both support and advice.
